General GPS and driving directions for those of you wanting to travel to the overall recreational area.  I provide driving directions to the trails in the individual trail reviews.


DuPont State Forest

DuPont State Forest is located in Henderson and Transylvania Counties between the towns of Hendersonville and Brevard.

 

From Asheville: take I-26 east toward the Asheville Airport. Exit at the Airport (exit 40) and head south on NC-280 for about 16 miles. Turn left onto US -64 (heading east) for about 4 miles. In Penrose, turn right onto Crab Creek Road for about 4 miles to DuPont Road. Turn right on DuPont Road and continue for 3.1 miles.

 

From Brevard: take US 276 south to Cedar Mountain and turn left on Cascade Lake Road. Continue on Cascade Lake road for 2.5 miles, then turn right on Staton Road/DuPont Road. Continue on Staton Road/DuPont Road for 1.5 miles until you reach the High Falls access area.

 

From Hendersonville: take US 25 Business (Church Street) south to Kanuga Road. Turn right on Kanuga Road, which becomes Crab Creek Road, and go 11 miles. Turn left on DuPont Road and continue for 3.1 miles.

 

GPS:  For internet mapping or turn-by-turn GPS, enter the intersection of Staton Road and Cascade Lake Road. From there, head northeast on Staton Road for 1.5 miles until you reach the High Falls access area.

 


Gorges State Park

Gorges State Park is located in Transylvania County and joins the North Carolina/South Carolina state line. The park is approximately 45 miles southwest of Asheville, and the Visitor Center is located at the Grassy Ridge access in Sapphire.

 

From Asheville: reach the park from I-26, taking exit 9 onto NC 280 and traveling west toward Brevard. Turn west on US 64 and travel toward Sapphire. To reach the Frozen Creek Access (east side of the park), turn left onto Frozen Creek Road, which is approximately two miles past NC 178. The east entrance is three miles on the right. To reach the Grassy Ridge Access (west side of the park), turn south on NC 281 in Sapphire; the western park entrance is .7 miles on the left.

 

From Atlanta, GA: reach the park from I-85, taking South Carolina exit 2 onto SC 11 and traveling north toward Walhalla, SC. Turn north on SC 130, which becomes NC 281 at the North Carolina state line. Continue north on NC 281. The Grassy Ridge Access (west side of the park) is approximately seven miles north of the state line on the right. To reach the Frozen Creek Access (east side of the park), turn east on NC 64 in Sapphire. Travel toward Brevard approximately eight miles and turn right on Frozen Creek Road. The east entrance is three miles on the right.

 

From Charlotte: reach the park by traveling on west on NC 74 to I-26. Turn west on I-26, traveling toward Hendersonville. Take exit 18 to NC 64 and travel west through Brevard toward Sapphire. To reach the Frozen Creek Access (east side of the park), turn left onto Frozen Creek Road, which is approximately two miles past NC 178. The east entrance is three miles on the right. To reach the Grassy Ridge Access (west side of the park), turn south on NC 281 in Sapphire; the western park entrance is .7 miles on the left.

 

From Greenville, SC: reach the park by traveling on US 276 north to SC 11. Take SC 11 south toward Walhalla, SC, and turn north on SC 130, which becomes NC 281 at the North Carolina state line. Continue north on NC 281. The Grassy Ridge Access (west side of the park) is approximately seven miles north of the state line on the right. To reach the Frozen Creek Access (east side of the park), turn east on NC 64 in Sapphire. Travel toward Brevard approximately eight miles and turn right on Frozen Creek Road. The east entrance is three miles on the right.

Pisgah Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest

The Pisgah Ranger Station is the destination for the following directions:


From Brevard: Start out going east on N Broad St/US-64/US-276 toward E Probart St. Continue to follow US-64 E/US-276 N. 3.3 mi  Turn left onto US-64/US-276. Continue to follow US-276.  The Ranger Station will be on your right a few miles into Pisgah National Forest.


From Asheville: Take Airport Rd. (Hwy. 280) off of Hendersonville Hwy. in Arden. Continue on 280 past Asheville airport to Wal-Mart Shopping Plaza just before Brevard. Turn right onto US 276 into Pisgah Forest. The Ranger Visitor Center will be located on the right a few miles in.


From Hendersonville: Take US 64 West from downtown to the intersection of Hwy. 280 and Hwy. 276 at the Wal-Mart Shopping Plaza. Continue straight through light to US 276 and into the Forest. Look for the Ranger Visitor Center on your right.


From Waynesville:  Head south on S Main St toward Pigeon St.  Take the 1st left onto US-276 S/​Pigeon St.  Continue to follow US-276 S for 34.2 miles.   The Pisgah Ranger Station will be on your left.
