Hiking Trail Review
Farm House Trail
DuPont State Forest

A nice hike through a pine grove near Guion Farm.

Farm House Trail in DuPont State Forest

The Flatwoods is the setting for this trail.

This trail is accessible from the Guion Farm Access Area.  There is a kiosk present and the farmhouse is set in a field.  I am assuming this is the namesake of the trail, which is easy to hike.

From DuPont Road (a.k.a. Staton Road):  Turn onto Sky Valley Road off DuPont Road.  This junction is 3.2 miles north of the DuPont Visitors Centre.  Travel 1.6 miles to the Guion Farm Access Area on the right.  Note the road turns to gravel at .7 miles.  The parking area is medium-sized and in a large field near the farmhouse.

Blaze Markings:  unblazed

Length:  approximately .6 miles (approximately 1 .1 miles there and back as the trail does not end at an accessible location; exactly 2945 feet one way or 5890 feet there and back.  This matches the one way distance of .6 miles listed on the DuPont State Recreational Forest trail map published by the North Carolina Forest Service (20012).  The trail can be made a loop by adding 1712 feet of Shoal Creek Trail to and including all of the Flatwoods Trail

Difficulty:  moderate; this is the official trail designation and assumes a one way trip.  This trail is easy, in my opinion, even considered as a there and back.

A view from the trail

This trail is through a damp pine grove as the presence of moss and ferns indicate.  The first 1500’ of the trail parallels the road.  It has been cleared out and worked on recently.  When I hiked it, I was walking through the fresh treadmarks of a bulldozer.

I began measuring distance at the trail sign at the junction of Farm House and Flatwoods Trails, which is across the road from the parking area.

At 536’, the farmhouse is visible across the road.

At 2192’, there is a marshy area to the right.  A branch comes out of the ground to the left.

At 2945’, the trail ends at a junction with Shoal Creek Trail.

An ending...and a new beginning
